Llama, Llama Red Pajama

On October 6, 2011, Llama, Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney will be read to preschool youngsters in Chemung County and across America.  Thanks to a grant from Kiwanis, the Family Reading Partnership of Chemung Valley (FRPCV) has purchased 100 copies of Llama, Llama Red Pajama for pre-school distribution.   This is an effort in partnership with Jumpstart, a national early education program designed to develop language and literacy skills.

The Family Reading Partnership of Chemung Valley serves Chemung County through a variety of programs, including, but not limited to: Books at Birth, Traveling Books, The Bright Red Bookshelf, and Reach Out and Read.  Through the Read for the Record program, FRPCV works to facilitate this Jumpstart program on a local level.  “We all need a ‘jumpstart’ in our lives,” said LL Cool J, one of a number of celebrities participating.  “My grandparents and my mother,” he continued, “were my early ‘jumpstart’.  I can’t imagine being where I am now without their support and without books in my life.  I am involved with Jumpstart because they work directly with thousands of children across our country to help them succeed in school and in life”.

According to the US Census Bureau, 46.2 million citizens are in poverty, the highest number in 52 years of reporting.  Literacy rates and poverty numbers are intertwined.  Reading to children is rewarding personally.  It opens up the world around them, and becoming an opportunity for lifelong literacy.  The Family Reading Partnership of Chemung Valley encourages all families to enjoy, Llama, Llama Red Pajama on October 6th.  Keep reading!
